Terms of Service
Last updated 3 September 2026
Welcome to CanalRoute. These Terms of Service (“Terms”) apply to your use of the CanalRoute app and related services (“CanalRoute”, “the app”, “we”, “us”). By using the app you agree to these Terms, so please read them carefully.
Provider: CanalRoute, based in the Netherlands.

1. What CanalRoute is
CanalRoute helps you plan and follow scenic boat routes through Amsterdam’s canals. You choose how long you’d like to be out, and the app suggests a route or a round-trip loop over the water, shows your position, points the way, and can record your trip.
CanalRoute is a planning and guidance aid only. Suggested routes, times, and distances are estimates to help you plan — they are not a guarantee that a route is open, safe, legal, or navigable for your specific boat at a given time.
2. Safety and the water are your responsibility — important
You are responsible for safe navigation at all times. Always follow the official signage, waterway rules, bridge and lock heights, one-way markings, speed limits, and local regulations on the water — these take priority over anything the app shows. Water conditions, closures, events, and traffic change constantly and may not be reflected in the app. Do not rely on CanalRoute as your only source of navigation, and do not use the app in a way that distracts you from operating your boat safely.
You are responsible for having the proper permits, insurance, and a boat that is legal and suitable for the waterways you travel.
3. Access and use
- CanalRoute has no account and no login; you can use it directly.
- CanalRoute is not intended for children under 16.
- You agree to use the app only for its intended purpose and in line with these Terms.
- You won’t attempt to disrupt, bypass, or misuse the app’s operation, security, or availability, and you won’t use it for any unlawful purpose.
4. Location
CanalRoute uses your device location to plan, show, and guide your route, including in the background during an active trip so your route is captured while your phone is in your pocket. See our Privacy Policy for details. You control this permission in iOS Settings at any time.
5. Availability and changes
We aim to keep CanalRoute working well, but the app is provided “as is” and “as available”. We don’t warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation, and route data may be incomplete or out of date. We may change, suspend, or discontinue features and update these Terms; the date at the top shows the latest version, and we’ll flag important changes in the app.
6. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, CanalRoute is not liable for indirect or consequential damage, or for damage arising from:
- reliance on suggested routes, times, distances, or map data;
- accidents, collisions, fines, or damage while operating a boat;
- the app being (temporarily) unavailable or inaccurate;
- use of the app contrary to these Terms.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that may not be excluded under mandatory law (such as intent or deliberate recklessness). For consumers, mandatory statutory rights remain fully in effect.
7. Termination
You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it. We may restrict or end access in case of misuse or breach of these Terms.
8. Governing law
These Terms are governed by Dutch law. Disputes will be submitted to the competent court in the Netherlands, unless mandatory law provides otherwise.
